Eisenstadt is the capital of the Burgenland and the economic,
educational and cultural center of the region. This lovely baroque
town - its buildings show the influence of the Esterházy
family - and cultural center is located on the southern hill of
the Leithagebirge mountain range. Eisenstadt is the smallest and
youngest city amongst Austria's regional capitals.
During the 18th century Eisenstadt flourished under the influence
of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy - a big lover of the arts - in whose
court orchestra Joseph Haydn was the director of music for 30 years.
Thanks to Haydn and his unforgettable work Eisenstadt has become
famous beyond the borders of Austria. Other famous personalities
born in this city are the well-known dancer Fanny Elßler, the composer
Josef Weigel and the physician Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis.
Schloss Esterházy castle is Burgenland´s most significant cultural
monument. The Esterházy family has owned the castle since 1622 and it
is closely connected with the history of the Pannonian area. Its rich
cultural program and special location make the castle unique in the
21st century, too. Unique as a place with a fascinating history and
as an international center of living culture. The originally Gothic
castle combines Baroque pomp, classical severety and Austrian
"Biedermeier". The Haydn hall, the castle´s showpiece, is one of
the most beautiful and acoustically best concert halls in the world.
