To keep in touch with my friends in Austria, I'm starting a weblog at enim.home.pages.de. Ask me for the site password!

If everything goes well, I'm going to start working at the Institute of Computer Science, Programming and Software Engineering Unit of the Ludwigs-Maximilian Universität München on August 1, 2006. In the meantime, I'm taking a short pause (besides looking for an accommodation in Munich). I'm making use of my "Niederösterreich-Card" and am reading quite a bit (see my list).

On May 31, 2006, I've finished my community service. What's next? I'm looking forward for a PhD studentship / research assistant position in Munich.

As of today I own a Philips Videowriter 4460, which is a peculiar rarity of the eighties that looks like a mixture between a printer, a microwave oven and a computer. It's a bit more than an electronic typewriter, but less than a real personal computer. The missing link between the two, if you want. See some pictures.

There's a new photo gallery.

2005-06-03
I've just started my community service at the Lebenshilfe Niederösterreich in Oberwölbling, a really small town in Lower Austria.

Added a small photo album.

Another year has passed. Had to update my age again :-).

I got one step further in my Hap Ki Do training. I now bear the 6th kub degree.

By the way, this month I've also completed my master studies of computer science.

2004-12-16
Japanese studies are fun :-). By the way, I've just finished my master's thesis. See my official page for more information.

So what's on? I'm planning to enrol myself for Japanese studies. I'm already very curious how a computer scientist like me will be able to adapt himself to humanities. An exciting experiment, for sure. Let's see how long it will last.

Did some soft hap ki do training today (again). Put a considerable update on this page.

2004-06-06
I discovered some new nice web comics. Added them to the list.

I've splintered a cartilage of my left little finger. Even though the doctor didn't explicitly forbid me to do Chirugis—I was smart enough not to ask ;-)—I guess this means a little pause in my hap ki do training :-( Well, it could have turned out worse.

2004-05-24
I'm going to be a candidate in the Ö1 Kulturquiz. The programme will be broadcast from the Kunsthalle Krems on July 18, 2004 at 13:10 MEST and is available via these frequencies and as internet live stream.

Updated links, age :-)

About Me

Daemon or demon?
I'm Michael, 27 years old. I've recently completed my master (equivalent) studies of computer science at Vienna University of Technologies. If you are interested in my more scientific activities, please check my official site. Following almost one year of Japanese studies at the University of Vienna "Rudolphina", I started my community service on June 3, 2005, at the Lebenshilfe Niederösterreich in Oberwölbling, a really small town in Lower Austria. My service has ended on May 31, 2006. Here are some photos of me.

Current activities:

  • Learning Japanese. It's a beautiful language, and I'm learning it for fun.
  • Hap Ki Do. This is the Korean martial art of self defense. I currently bear the 6th kub degree.
  • Reading Comics. As a hard copy, or on the web.

Past activities:

  • Drawing. For some time I used to like to draw, but nowadays I'm not so eager about it. Here are two of my works: Irini and Hana.
  • Star Gazing. Knowing the stars by name and even being able to locate them on the sky is fascinating, once one gets started. Then those random dots suddenly become arranged in familiar patterns. Alas, I find no time for this, nowadays.

My Other Pages

My Official Homepage offers you some information about my professional activities.

Linux on the Acer Aspire 1300XV is my small contribution to the Linux community. It is a report on my experiences with Linux on the mentioned laptop computer. It is updated periodically, mostly when I manage to improve my own system or when people send in comments.

Fatatistic Literature & Science Fiction

I'm a fan of science fiction and fatatistic literature. Here are my favourite authors: Carmen Boullosa, Arthur C. Clarke, Marcus Hammerschmitt, Stanislaw Lem and Paul Scheerbart. Here's some Russian prose and science fiction. Besides such rather thoughtful literature, I equally well enjoy it when Captain Kirk decides to fry some aliens, or when the dark side of the Force meets the light side. Speaking of darkness and light, I mustn't fail to mention that I'm a fan of the the excellent TV series Babylon 5.

In this line, you won't be surprised that I also enjoy mythology of all kind, even though I have to admit that my knowledge of Greek mythology has faded slightly since I read Sagen des klassischen Altertums by Gustav Schwab at school. I'll have to brush it up sometime. Here's a small but fine piece of Japanese mythology. And here are the dragons. If you really want to delve into mythology, go to the pantheon.

Comics

For recreation I like to read comics. Here are some which are freely available on the net:

Creeping Me Out is one of the strager things I've discovered lately. Features a tiny pink dinosaur, human-devouring zombies, a sexy readhead and more.

Dr. Fun was probably one of the first regular comic strips on the internet. I've you're a scientist with a fine sense of self-irony and an affinity for peculiar humor, then try it. Update: Dr. Fun is over!

Girly is not really witty or exciting, but it offers me my regular dose of slapstick.

Joy of Tech brings a regular dose of peculiar tech humor. Occasionally witty.

Purple Pussy is persistently filthy, occasionally grotesque and deeply violent. Nothing for wimps!

User Friendly is a classic of tech humor. Occasionally cute and witty, it serves as a valve for the frustration computer technicians accumulate in their daily interaction with ordinary people.

Knowledge & Trivia

Everything is the sly, user-edited cyclopedia that was there when wikis weren't. Today there's Wikipedia, but Everthing is still a funny old grandpa one likes to visit once in while.

Slashdot. News for nerds, stuff that matters. That's Slashdot's self-image. Nowadays I don't feel geeky enough to read it. That's why I have no say anymore, when it comes to the latest technological trivia. If you'd rather like to have your say, read it.
