Recommended Packages

mfpic
Creates drawings and diagrams via the aid of Metafont (or Metapost, alternatively). Text is set by TeX, therefore you will have the same font(s) in the main text and in the drawings.
rsfs
Want to have that beautiful Fourier Transform “F”? So you'll need Ralph Smith's Formal Script. The font itself comes in Metafont and Postscript Type1 format, and a style file from Jörg Knappen makes life easy.
wrapfig
Figures usually span the whole column width, which is particular ugly when they are small. wrapfig allows you to have the text smoothly running around one side of the picture. But be careful: wrapfig does not use TeX's float-mechanism, so wrapfig's should not be mixed with figure-environments. (Note: Package documentation can be found at the end of the syle file.)
floatflt
Serves the same purpose as wrapfig, but actually produces real ‘figures’ (sliding). Can't be used with multicolumn documents.
prosper
Make your presentation slides in LaTeX! Needs pstricks, hyperref, url, seminar.
dinbrief
Have your letters formatted as the wise people from the german standards institute devised it. Also makes nice address labels.

All these packages can be found on CTAN, the Comprehensive Tex Archive Network: Austria Germany
